LM Montgomery is a gifted storyteller, no doubt about it. In the beginning, the miserable circumstances she described and outrageously annoying characters reminded me of a Roald Dahl book.
As a quiet rebel, I admired Valancy. It takes a lot of bravery to defy the overly formal, closed-minded institutions that worry so much about keeping up appearances.
I laughed and I cried. Great book!

Valancy wondered pitifully what it would be like to be wanted by some one—needed by some one. No one in the whole world needed her, or would miss anything from life if she dropped suddenly out of it.

I went into this blind, only knowing it was written by LM Montgomery. I was expecting a middle grade book but I was very wrong. This is about a 29 year old woman who has been looked down upon and mistreated by everyone for her entire life. When she gets some tragic news, she decides to take control of her future.
I could definitely recognize Montgomery’s writing in the descriptions of people and places which felt very Anne-like to me.

The book was like balm for the soul. It was a blend of insight into early 20th-century Canada, with all its societal norms and how life unfolded during that time, and a sort of fairy tale where the heroine had to learn to believe in herself in order to achieve a happy ending. The beautifully detailed descriptions of nature and the changing seasons, as well as the witty, sharp character portrayals, added the perfect finishing touch to the story.

I’m a bit torn about this novel.
Despite it being a historical work and the language is therefore not exactly the same as todays, it was a rather quick and easy read.
The language actually had me chuckle a couple of times, when I realized how the meaning of words has changed in the last hundred years or so.
The love story is very sweet and for me it was believable.
My problem was with Valancy or rather with some aspects of her character. Mostly I liked her just fine … just when she was dealing with her family, I didn’t.
I understand being exhausted by and angry at her family, but I still think she was very harsh and sometimes even cruel with them. They weren’t psychopaths who held her captive and tortured her all her life. They were just little people with little minds and huge egos and it’s not their fault that they never treated her differently when she never told them to change their behavior! How were they supposed to know she was unhappy when she never told them? She never stood her ground until she was twenty nine and then she let them have everything. She never acknowledges that maybe she has a part of the guilt for her unhappy life as well and that really annoyed me.
In essence, if you want something changed in any of your relationships, talk about it. The other person can’t read your mind!

I received this book in my December 2024 Literary Book Club box. The author was familiar to me- Ms. Montgomery wrote the Anne of Green Gables series- but I had never read The Blue Castle before. In fact, I knew basically nothing about it going into the story. Sometimes I think that works in my favor, and in this case it did.
Very quickly into it I became suspicious of two things: one was about the news Valency would receive, and two, how her family treated her. My first thought in regards to her family was, "Emotional abuse from family??" As I continued reading, I saw more evidence of that and my heart went out to her.
The story shows us Valency's growth as she is faced with some tough choices. I felt proud "watching" her grow into her own person. Are you curious as to what exactly the Blue Castle is? Well, you will have to read the book to find out.
*What I have expressed are entirely my own thoughts. I was not compensated in any monetary way.*

Moderate: Death, Emotional abuse, and Alcohol
Minor: Child death, Death, Physical abuse, and Death of parent

The cover of this book is misleading to me. It looks like it would be a more serious tone so I was not expecting all the wit and humor! This was a really fun read for me (a tad slow in the beginning) with a very satisfying ending.
