I have read a number of Elise's other books, so going into this I had a level of expectation. Whilst the book is still good, it didn't meet that level, however after looking into it I realised this was her debut novel. It was a little slow moving and for me I found it a little lacking which meant it took me longer to get through than normal. The magic system is solid with different regions having the possibility of their people having a specific elemental magic, similar to Avatar. There is plenty of political intrigue and an ongoing war, although there isn't a lot of action in this book. I'm not 100% sold on the MMC however the bond aspect is intriguing and I like that its different from the standard mate type bond.

I feel like I'll get back to this; I'm not in the mood currently.

Because I have a kindle now, I've been going on the hunt for buying books with kindle deals. I decided to get this for shameless cover love.

I loved this book so much it really stood out in a world of magic based YA as being different than anything I have ever read. I loved the characters so much especially Vhala and Aldrick their relationship was a rocky one started out not so good and grew into something you just root for. I loved Vhala for wanting to be who she is and only when the worst happened did she just about want to give up I am really rooting for her. I loved Aldrick even if he started out as a pretty cold character you could really see what he felt for Vhala by the end it was so very heart wrenching. I really loved the plot it started out with a girl that was discovered to have magic to only reject it and then learned to not reject it before the story threw a curve ball though I loved the book overall I will be reading the rest soon.

Probably more of a 3.5 stars.
I very much enjoyed this! I did find it was a bit trope-y and it took me a little to really get into it, but about 50-60 pages in I was hooked!
The magic so far sounds like an interesting take on elemental systems. Magic systems are always my favorite things in pretty much any media, so I'm definitely excited to read further and see how it's expanded upon.
My main complaint with this book would probably be Vhalla? She acts a bit more helpless than necessary in my opinion, though I feel from the tone towards the end of the book that in the next installments there will be a shift in her and that will change. I liked Vhalla and honestly I saw a bit of myself in her, but I was just frustrated a bit at some of her actions/choices.
Excited to pick up Fire Falling!
