All Boys aren’t blue is an impactful and accessible look in the intersection of black and queer identity. Johnson writes conversational and introduces concepts of anti-racism eloquently.

While this book is written for a YA crowd it does not talk down to its audience. Older generations will get a lot out of reading it too.

A great look into the life of a black queer man and hearing it narrated in George’s voice was wonderful.

George M. Johnson writes about their black, queer, male experience with a frankness and reflective quality that makes it both sentimental and informative. Johnson shares necessary crash courses on black American history with the same analytical honesty they approach their first sexual experiences.

The letters to members of their family are heartfelt and poignant. Their reflections on how experiences shaped them and informed their approach to life are interesting, but seem more valuable to them than to a reader.

This book is written specifically for young, black, queer kids, so I’m not exactly their target demographic, but I can appreciate how important this book is for expanding my worldview and for how vital it is for young adults.

I found it a bit unfocused for my liking, I think I was just expecting something more informative and less memoir-heavy, when this book is definitely a memoir.

No rating for nonfiction, but I do recommend reading this one. It was difficult to get through some parts because of the content, so I would check content warnings. This story is such an important lesson for people who identify more like me than they do the person telling this story.
