Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made by Jason Schreier

informative lighthearted reflective fast-paced

5.0

I discovered Jason Schreier while trying to get more high-interest nonfiction for my classroom library. As I debated which ones to buy, my husband mentioned really liking Schreier's articles. I can see now why everyone praises his journalism. I am not a gamer myself, though my husband played and/or loves some of the games in this book. My lack of technical knowledge of building video games was NOT a barrier when reading this book. In fact, I was consistently impressed with Schreier's easy-going tone and explanations that were neither simplified nor inaccessible. Even more impressive was Schreier's commitment to honesty and transparency. In such a passionate industry and being passionate about games himself, Schreier maintained journalistic integrity, providing even and fair full pictures of complicated situations and opinions.  I would love him to write another of these books, especially considering how turbulent certain franchises (Destiny) have been in the years since this one was published.
