Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo
3.25
3/3.5 stars - I really liked this overall, but the middle was tough to push through. The idea of them having to go to hell to rescue Darlington was great, so it started off pretty strong. But the middle just felt much longer than it needed to be. Then the ending was high energy and, while still took longer than necessary, was an interesting turn of events.
My random thoughts:
- It feels a little repetitive: they try a ritual, it fails, something comes out of hell, they get in trouble, they try another ritual, rinse and repeat
- There were moments that were exciting and kept me captivated. The ending was interesting and I found myself not wanting to put it down for the final 10-15%
- Darlington was barely in these books so why do I like him so much?
- The first trip to hell, when they are cornered by the hounds. I loved it, it was an edge-of-my-seat kind of moment and I could really picture the scene running in my head.
- There are so many characters to remember and the fact that they’re all getting murdered or taken over by demons is so confusing sometimes. But also it keeps you on your toes, never really trusting anything, which is basically what the characters had to go through too.
- Did they REALLY think they could just stroll into hell, grab Darlington, and stroll back out, maybe fight a few monsters along the way, and then NOT have any repercussions?
