Of Seas and Sunsets: A Little Mermaid Fairy Tale Retelling by J. Ann Curtis

4.0

I had SO much fun with this one!

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this one, but I know I left it on a standing ovation.

And so much of that is thanks to an incredible anti-heroine.

I loved Orsana. She carried a heavy weight in her heart, one filled with despair, rage, and anger. And all of it with good reason. So she chooses to create plan to enact vengeance, but goes in blindly to all this will encumber. She sets her sight to the presumed evil doing on both land and sea. Part of this plan includes the human prince, and it is he who will unravel it all.

Her expectations of who the human prince is are shattered when she sees the real him. A man devoted to his people, loyal to his duty, and desperate to keep footing when it seems his role can be stripped away at any time. His position is precarious and what once Orsana saw as cowardice, she soon finds his actions are carefully crafted to ensure the least amount of blood spilt. He’s trying, far more than the sea witch would have ever anticipated.

And that changes everything for Orsana. The second her heart is opened, the course of her life finds new, unexpected direction.

But when the truth is revealed— what will that mean for the prince, and what consequences will Orsana have to face?

The plot develops steadily, every turn of the page filled me with anticipation of what was yet to come. There are unexpected twists that had me clutching my pearls! I was just aaaah! I was all in! I was engaged! I was obsessed with this book more than I ever guessed I would be! I know it’s a bunch of exclamation points but it’s the best way to detail how I was feeling throughout this journey! !!!

I very much enjoyed it! If I had a quibble it was feeling too many transformations took place in the final act, throwing the pacing off a bit, but honestly— what a nitpick that feels like to say, when it never deterred my devotion to this book.

I just so wholly enjoyed it, y’all!

If you love fairytale retellings with a twist, do me a favor: read this one asap! You’ll love it!

Now excuse me while I go peruse the rest of J. Ann Curtis’ works, because I need more!
