Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening by Marjorie Liu

4.0

A very interesting, if not a little weird, story of a young girl with a god-like monster living inside her. I felt pretty invested in Maika as a character from the start, and very interesting to see a character with only one arm. Not something I see often in graphic novels. I loved Red, the talking cat. He was sassy and smart and I can't wait to see more of him.
Whilst reading, I was so surprised by the number of women in the book. I feel like in the fantasy genre, I just always expect there to be more male characters, as that's just the general norm for fantasy, but this book is packed with female characters. In fact, there's only a handful of male characters, and most of them are talking cats.

The artwork is simply glorious. It's almost like a cross between graphic novel and manga and it suited the tone of the story so well.
I'm not normally the biggest fan of steampunk books, but here it feels so natural. The tech wasn't even mentioned, only used, so it never felt like a shoe-horned in gimmick.

The story was at times a little confusing. The amount of information thrown at me was overwhelming and I know for a fact I retained less than half of it all. This is a world with a very complex history and political machinations, with I enjoyed, but also can't help but think some of the world-building should've been held back for the next volume. The world is undoubtedly fascinating and I want to learn more, but if it all developed just a little slower, it might have been more digestible. It was hard to keep track of who's who and where's where. But I'm very hopeful that things will become understandable with each volume. As I grow more comfortable within this world, so too will its intricacies become clearer.
