Death and Sweet Temptations by Kristen Coar
4.0
ARC - Tommy Wiseau would tell you to read this because there's something for everyone in it! Do you like talking/shifter Corgis? Got one. A badass main female lead? Got one. A paranormal universe with a mad villain? Got one. Love at first sight? Got it. Corporate world enmeshed in the supernatural? Got it. Badass female bestie? Got it.
There's a rich tapestry of characters in this book, each with their own unique traits and roles. Alex, the main character, is a likable and capable individual with a tough exterior. Her dark past adds depth to her character, making her even more intriguing. Izzie and Argo, her fantastic counterparts, bring a playful tone to the story, balancing out the serious elements.
This wasn't a heavy story or plot. It felt more like a monster of the week episode of Buffy or Angel, and that's not an insult.
The writing in this book is a delight to read. It flows easily, making it a breeze to get lost in the story. The author's voice is unique and engaging, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the reading experience.
I appreciate solid fight sequences, and all of them were easy to visualize, exciting to experience, and believable within the realm of rules made in this universe.
Lucas was one of the only things that prevented this from being a five-star. I know the gig was a love-at-first-corporate meeting, but while that isn't my personal jam, I can appreciate it. However, Lucas felt utterly void of any personality. Other than stumbling over his words with constant "ums," I couldn't figure out why Alex was interested in him.
The story also could have benefited from a lot more showing and a lot less telling to become a bit more immersive.
Overall, this is perfect for its genre and a ton of fun, which I needed after my last read. It's not breaking any new ground, but it's an enjoyable comfort read. I recommend this and would read more books by the author.
