Oh wow, I loved this WAY more than I was expecting to. This sounded so good but ended up grossly exceeding my expectations. This story is very much Scream, but way more queer, which I obviously love. I loved the focus on queer friendships, mainly that between Dearie and Cole. Their friendship is so endearing and supportive. They experience their fair share of speed bumps, but they still always work everything out together. The author also handled the police interactions very well and showed the differences, especially with Cole, who is a Latine character. The author also handled the aspect of abusive relationships very well. Emotional abuse is often overlooked and downplayed as not as bad as physical abuse, but abuse is abuse no matter the way it's received, and the author reveals that here, as well as how the brain reacts to it as a way of protecting itself. I will say I was able to predict the twist at the end, but I still really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun. There is also this fight between a purity culture way of thinking (stemming from what can only be described as internalized homophobia) and sex positivity. In the end, sex positivity wins out as it should. It's dark, it's scary, it's funny, and it's sweet. There's a lot going on here, and there are so many aspects of the story to love.
