The Call of the Sea by Kate Schumacher

4.0

Who knew a slow burn about fairies, sirens/mermaids and pirates with an Arthurian sprinkle would be my book club read? This girl.
It was my month to suggest and I saw some promos on TikTok for it and I took a chance and was surprised. I wasn’t holding much hope, just a fun read, tbh but I enjoyed the banter and how the main character was rebellious and didn’t conform to the towns ideas of what a perfect religious woman should be like. It was almost like stepping into the Stepford wives type of town.
What’s in store in this book?
Meet a pirate she has feelings for
Her guy best friend whom she is forced to marry
A female pirate captain and her all female crew on a magic pirate ship go around and save women who are in trouble
Bound and unbound magic powers
A religion who steps on the necks of women and LGBTQ and their devilish ways
Her ever fiber of her being being called to the sea
A young man who is the son of the religious leader of the town who doesn’t want to be like his father
Gods, Demi gods, mythology sea creatures
King Arthur lore
Ok that’s it. I don’t want to spoil much more than that.
It’s an enjoyable read. It was an adventure and I am ready for book 2 when it comes out.
