Stars in Your Eyes by Kacen Callender

5.0

This book tells of the relationship between Hollywood bad boy Logan Gray and up-and-coming golden boy, Matthew Cole. The tale starts when Mattie and Logan are cast opposite each other in a queer rom-com, but (in a very meta situation), find themselves in a "real" fake dating grumpy-sunshine trope to save the film.

This book wouldn't classify as a rom-com itself, however, as it dives deep into trauma from child abuse, including alcohol and drug use, suicidal thoughts, and self-destructive behavior.

Forced to spend time together both on and off set, the two begin to open up to each other and fall in love. Mattie is the catalyst for Logan to want a better life for himself. But he's still so trauma-striken that he's incapable of trusting that love or feeling he deserves it, so he keeps sabotaging the relationship and hurting Matt. It was ultimately a story of finding the strength to heal on your own, with both boys having to put in real work separately to become emotionally available.

The author used some unique storytelling elements, including excerpts from Mattie's memoir, youtube transcripts, and social media comments.

Aside from addressing mental health, the book also brings to question the way society views celebrities - wanting to watch them rise only to relish in their inevitable fall.

Logan and Mattie definitely hit me in all the feels! This one is full of trigger warnings, so go in prepared. But I highly recommend this heartfelt, poignant, and worthy read.
