Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

3.75

I am so torn on how to rate this!!!! So I think I am going to rate it at a 3.75. I wanted to read this to see what the hype was about & also because I know it will be coming out as a movie in the future. Also my husband is such a fan of The Martian (movie) so I was already familiar with Weir's humor. The humor definitely came through while reading and I loved his relationship with alien Rocky. And Ryland just seemed like such a good dude! He was a highly intelligent teacher who kind of got thrown into this space program and then was left to fend for himself out there. One thing I wonder and perhaps I missed it but was anyone looking for him? Surely someone back on Earth knew he was out there.

But the science of it all. The science was very high level even if it was made up (or maybe it wasn't?!) and that was where it was losing me. And yes I understand that is part of this as a book that takes place in space.

I did pair my reading with the audio (Audible exclusive) and I am glad I had my book because within chapters it would go from being in present to the past. Luckily you knew when it would switch to the past based off what was happening but still it happened to seamless that it could throw you off. Ray Porter was such a perfect narrator and made me believe that he was Ryland. I thought his timing of the dialogue between himself and even with Rocky was so good.

I am happy I read this & I think Ryan Gosling is going to be amazing as Ryland Grace. I will be very curious how they create Rocky and what they will look like.
