I used to love The Breakfast Club at a teen. As an angsty teen, I felt it spoke to me. This is a much better version of that with a lot of queer rep. Theo is a Black gay teen experiencing the woes of being a junior in high school. Thinking about college, what everyone expects of him, sustaining his image, and will be be able to take someone to prom? All while dissecting the intersection of his black and queer identities. We only get his POV of the story, but there are so many interesting characters at play throughout this book. This story really addresses the pressures of high school and the expectations of being on the verge of adulthood. Theo learns more about himself and begins to truly accept who he is and not who people expect him to be. He learns to stand up for himself and set boundaries. It's all so lovely to see. This is such a great story, and I had such a wonderful time reading it.
