I adored this book.

An ode to survival, to queer joy, to kids making their own future, The Flicker is a beautiful story of found family and hope in the darkest times.

This world is dark, and lonely, and it seems hopeless, but this story gives you hope. It builds you up, when the rest of the world tries to bring you down.

It’s sad, incredibly so, but it’s also so, so sweet. There are so many dark moments but just as many moments of joy, of kids being kids.

The kids were incredibly well written and realistic. Rose reminded me of myself when I was at that age, and it’s always wonderful to see a character similar to you.

I loved the found family narrative, the idea that family is so much more than blood. I really like that our main characters were step siblings, as that’s not something you see often! As someone with a lot of step and half siblings, the relationship was written so well and so realistically!

I just loved this book a bunch, I can’t recommend it enough.
