When She Was Me by Marlee Bush
2.0
This was everything I dislike in thrillers. The writing involved TOO MANY similes & just made the writing feel heavy. It took a lot to get through some of it.
This was also just entirely too long. There were many parts that felt too repetitive. The characters would think about the same things over & over again & the outcome would be the same. I was bored throughout most of this & just waiting for something to happen.
I understand why there were the "then" sections, based on what's revealed in the end; between those, flashbacks, nightmares, & multiple POVs, I couldn't keep track of what was going on. Then, once the end was revealed, I had to think back to who said what & whose story went with who. It made what could have been a decent ending, just more confusing.
As for the twist at the end, it just felt underwhelming. I didn't know exactly what was going to happen, but I felt like the book had dragged on for that long just for a mediocre ending.
I didn't like any of the characters, especially the main 2 MCs. I understand they're supposed to be the weird outcasts, but they just came across as annoying. One of them is supposedly a big YouTube star, but she acts like she was raised by wolves in the woods most of the time. The way the story is set up, it draws you out whenever her job is brought up. It doesn't even really play that big of a part in the end, so I feel like that part should have been different.
There were a few plot holes / unnecessary plots points & I still had questions in the end. Overall, I feel like this story was trying to be like 3 different things & couldn't figure it out. It just didn't work.
