Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell
5.0
Even though I found myself constantly wishing I had listened to the audiobook version, I was ultimately glad I read the ebook because the number of highlights and new vocabulary I got from this book is astounding. I am now itching for an opportunity to use “grandiloquent poppycock” at some point before I die.
The MLM chapters are my favorite. How did I just find out in my big age of 35 that Tupperware is MLM? It was literally in my face the past two years when a Mexican coworker brought a big Ikea bag of plastic containers and distributed them to our colleagues aka her customers. MLMs are everywhere. I have two more coworkers who sell Mary Kay and Scentsy—and I even purchased the Scentsy wax melts.
And did you know that Amway, the biggest MLM in America, was founded by a De Vos, FIL of that incompetent witch Betsy, and that Amway funded Trump? Ew. Gross.
The deep dive into cults like Jonestown and Heavens Gate was fascinating. Despite having watched a bunch of documentaries on both cults, this book still managed to offer new information and insight.
Enjoyed this book immensely. Would recommend.
