3.5

3.5 if I’m being more specific for my rating. I liked this, but I didn’t love it. It was very slow and the pacing was a little off. I feel like nothing really happened as far as plot goes. This book is completely focused on the academic/political drama of this world and does not have much in the way of action or exciting events that build energy and anticipation.
- this is very YA in the way the main character thinks and talks
- the characters are lovely and I really enjoyed the various interactions as Anequs discovered herself and her place in the world
- the polyamory and queer elements were beautifully written and executed and I am excited to see how it all develops in the next book
- I have absolutely no clue what half of the classes were about at that school. It sounded cool but my brain could NOT comprehend any of it. I still don’t actually understand the skiltas, what they are, what they look like, how they work. I get that they help rein in the dragons breath/power but I simply could not visualize anything about them
- I do plan to read the next one when it comes out, but I am wary of the pacing
