The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

This book wasn’t what I was expecting. From the cover and the blurb, I expected a more action-oriented, plot-driven book. Instead, the book was very character-driven, with fairly low-stakes encounters, most of them quickly resolved. (SPOILERS AHEAD) I was surprised when I got a third of the way through and nothing had happened. I was even more surprised when I got halfway through and the protagonist has to reveal her big secret… only for it to be immediately accepted by the rest of the crew with no consequences. By this point in the book, I’d I planned on writing a pretty scathing review. But it grew on me. All the little bits and pieces did eventually come together into a very poignant finale, even if it all happened in the last 20% or so. I’m not sure I’d ever read it again, but I don’t regret having read it the first time. The worldbuilding is interesting, and the ship’s crew (all of whom have POV sections, even if some of them are quite small) are a true family by the end, and one you want to root for. There’s more conflict in this book than the Monk and Robot series (the other Chambers books that I’ve read), but it’s got a similar character-driven vibe, and I sense that if you liked those ones, you’d probably like this one. (Though, MAJOR SPOILERS, there’s some heart-wrenching death at the end, so be aware of that going into it.)
