Annie Bot by Sierra Greer
4.0
This book was so weird but also... I liked it? It had me at AI, but honestly this book ended up being way more domestic relationship-focused than AI sci-fi vibe.
Doug buys Annie to be his robot companion and have all the robot sex his toxic heart desires... but then he wants more from her - he wants Annie to be the perfect woman (and she's not even human) but will soon see that autonomy is not conducive to perfection. (*gasp* making your own choices leads to... sometimes making bad choices...)
- Annie is a great focal point of this story, getting everything from her perspective, while still being written in third person pov.
- Doug is awful. But also he is human and a very realistic portrayal of a selfish and controlling man. I hated him, but also that was the point.
- The robot sex is weird. The robot servitude gets super uncomfortable at times.
- I love Monica the therapist and truly feel like she was so helpful in getting Doug and Annie to understand their dynamic better, plus finding solutions for real relationships.
- The ending was predictable but also still really empowering
- The conversation around AI capability and its place in the social setting was incredible
- The conversation around toxic men was also so good
