Normally I’m very good at getting through even awful books but this book … just no. It promises spookiness, gore, horror and magic. It delivers nothing of it but offers boredom, confusing plot, plain and boring characters, and utterly flat writing. The world building is horrible and I don’t understand how the magic system is supposed to work because there’s never a good explanation for it; instead you get 3,000 more terms. And all the side characters … it’s already the worst at the start but I skimmed through and it just gets worse. 

I was so hyped for this book because I love The Cruel Princes trilogy with it’s sharp writing, likeable characters (even if they are assholes), perfect world building etc. But Book of Night reads as if they were written by two utterly different authors.
