I’ve been saving this for an October read, and it was certainly worth the wait. A medical examiner and a detective end up meeting and connecting outside the job, only to run into each other later. I was curious to see how it would work.

I love Soula and Waylon so much. The constant push and pull as they are both unsure of where the other is at, especially after the shift their relationship takes. They both have some deep family trauma that impacts how they view the situation, as it rightfully should, but it’s nice to see them both break down those walls to let the other in. It’s such a healthy dynamic to see play out, especially as Soula realizes a portion of life she long had thought was out of reach is actually on the table.

I’m usually very on the fence about pregnancy tropes, but I’m so glad I took a chance on this one. It worked to force the two of them out of their stalemate while never forgoing either MC’s agency or history. They’re both so respectful of each other as they work through the news, what it means for them, and how their lives will change. Even when Waylon is seemingly a bit further along in the process, he never presses that onto Soula until she’s ready.
