Ascension by Nicholas Binge
3.5
4 stars for vibes. 3.5 stars overall.
- I enjoyed the science side of things for the first half. But the second half was more cosmic and I had trouble picturing scenes and really digesting what was happening.
- the idea of the mysterious mountain was incredibly interesting and I loved the adventure of discovery
- the backstory for Harold & Naoko and Santi was too drawn out. I liked the story and how it impacted his actions on the mountain but it took too long to get there
- Bettan swinging over the cliff to save Naoko was epic
- “I AM ALIEN” come on are you serious?? what kind of three-layers-of-cheese is that?
- but actually, I love that Neil was forgotten until he was needed to hurry the group along
- the format of the book, being written as Harold’s letters to Harriet. I liked the concept but the letters were unrealistically long and there’s no way he would have been able to catalog all that he did while all that was going on. And he also only had one useable hand.
- I like the open endedness - that maybe Harold made it all up and hallucinated everything. Or maybe it was true and one day the mountain will return to test some more humans.
