Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom
3.5
I wanted to love this book, but there was a disconnect for me. I liked it, but I found that I only really liked the parts of the story directly about Abitha and I cared far less about Samson's journey to self discovery.
- This book took me entirely too long to get through - while I enjoyed the story, I didn't find myself excited to pick it back up each time and I felt like there were some very slow moments that made me wishing it was shorter.
- The human conflict revolving around the strict Puritan community was more interesting to me (and easier to comprehend) than the demon/wildfolk scenes. Wallace was horrendous but a very appropriate villain.
- I still don't fully understand all of the back and forth between the wildfolk and Samson and then Mamunappeht. I could not visualize ANY of their scenes and it made it very hard to follow.
- The artwork in the middle was beautiful and chilling - it also helped me to know exactly what creatures I was dealing with. But even with the photos, I still struggled with visualizing their interaction scenes.
- The witch's war path at the end was great, the violence and vengeance was gory and brilliant. The very distinct depictions of violence during the witch trial/hanging scene is also chilling but so good.
- Minor Spoiler: I LOVED the irony that for the entirety of the book, the town is accusing Abitha of being a witch, of manipulating them and working with the devil (which... she is, but in ways far different from what the people think) and in the end she turns into exactly what they wanted her to be - a witch, a killer, working with the devil himself.
