The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
5.0
I loved this book. It was beautiful. It made me cry several times, perhaps because the themes of familial love are so powerfully explored within it. A mother's grief is contrasted against the warmth and comfort of a found family. The willingness to challenge an ingrained moral code in order to save someone you love. As one of the characters so aptly says:
"I am not a wicked man. I am a man who loves his family. And because I love them, I will kill the Witch. I will. I will kill the Witch or die trying.”
My favorite quote, though, may be a few simple words: "My heart is infinite." This resonates with me. We are capable of experiencing intense feelings of love for multiple people. There is no limit to the number of people we can hold in tender regard for whom we would sacrifice or strive to protect. Love is without borders. The heart expands to encompass those who touch it.
This is a book about love, loss, sorrow, and hope. It's a book about the power of knowledge and the danger of ignorance. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
