The first book in series are usually my favorite so the fact that this wasn't as enjoyable for me wasn't quite suprising. This was a good book though, don't get me wrong.

We explored themes of the abused becoming the enabler, children growing up too fast, the oldest child taking roles of parent, and so much more.

Shannon's mother's story is something I feel like should be she'd light on. She gave birth at 15... That was someone's baby. The author handled her and her relationship with her children delicately enough. I felt sympathy for everyone in their family, so much so that it was hard to pick a side and stick to it. Don't get me wrong, she definitely wasn't a good person, but I really wish she had that support system around her that Sharron and Joey luckily received.

Not sure if I'll read the other boys' stories but we'll see. Can't wait to revisit this series again one day.
