Air Awakens by Elise Kova
3.0
3.5 stars.
After the last two books I read, this was a welcome reprieve since there was action and interesting plot points throughout the book rather than just repetitive inner monologues, stupid main characters, and no action until the last 10% of the book.
In this one, we have main character Vhalla Yarl who works as a library apprentice and quickly discovers she is a sorcerer with an air affinity, aka a Windwalker - the first in 150 years. She's faced with the choice of whether to join the Tower, where sorcerer apprentices train, or to remain in the library and "eradicate" her magic.
The worldbuilding wasn't anything spectacular, and most characters are one dimensional, but it was a fast read that I would have finished in one sitting if not for work and other priorities. I have to say that I TRULY appreciate that aspect since the last 2 books I read were unnecessarily long and very difficult to get through. This book does have a tiny hint of a Forbidden Love trope (but no real direct romance) as well as a generous helping of the Chosen One trope. There are also several hints that much more is going on behind the scenes than Vhalla knows, so it'll be interesting to see how things unfold.
I'm like to see how the story progresses - mostly to see what happens with Egmun (who seems extra evil/cruel for no reason) and Prince Baldair (who I think is super shady) - so I will continue with at least one more book.
