Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond

5.0

I listened to this on Audible. The narrator did an excellent job, which helped to keep me engaged even as he spewed statistics that I know I'll never be able to recall with any accuracy.

This book explored the chasm between the well-off and those living in poverty. It touched on historical policies like redlining as well as the more subtle societal decisions made by middle-class Whites throughout American history. The book sometimes made me uncomfortable as it raised my awareness of experiences and circumstances so far removed from my own. It also made me want to do better, be better.
