I felt so many things while reading this. This story starts out very intense, with Ben being kicked out of their parents' home without shoes in the middle of winter. It was a bit jarring, but I am so glad I stayed with the story. Ben's thoughts and feelings about their gender identity really resonated with me. Also, their struggles with anxiety and panic attacks felt so real and relatable to me. I love that despite how their parents reacted to their coming out, they have a great support system with their sister, Hannah, and her husband, Thomas. Ben ends up also finding a great group of friends at school and finds a deep connection with Nathan. This book is labeled as a romance, and it is, but it is so much more than that. It is a story of self-discovery and self-acceptance. A story of being able to find healthy coping mechanisms in those struggles. Of finally standing up for yourself and doing what is right for you. Ben experiences so much growth throughout this story, and it is just so lovely to see. This book is so real and raw, and I really think anyone can find something to relate to here. In the darkness, there is light. Even with the heaviness of the story, there is so much hope in the end. I love this book so much and I think this one will definitely stick with me for a while. This is a new favorite and I highly recommend it.
