I tried to get into this book, especially since I had a pretty copy, but I struggled with it. Maybe it was due to my time constraints, but something felt missing. I can't quite pinpoint what it was, but I found myself skimming a lot. I wasn't very interested in the characters, which might be why I couldn't fully engage with the story. The pace felt too slow for me, and the 'will they/won’t they' romance dragged on. The magic and Asian history were interesting but didn’t hold me to skim through. Perhaps if I had more time or listened to it as an audiobook, I would have enjoyed it more. I can see it being a hit with some students, despite how busy they are it might be more a Xmas break or summer read, where they can take their time and enjoy the story.
