Shark Heart by Emily Habeck
4.0
Shark Heart is Emily Habeck's debut novel which I have seen highly recommended online and after it was nominated twice in the Goodreads choice awards, I decided to give it a go. I read this in one sitting and it was completely all-consuming. It has a fast-paced lyrical writing style and mixed media elements. For me, I wasn't a big fan of the actor/drama scenes where the script was written as a play but I still thought it was well done by the author.
I really really enjoyed the first part of this story with Wren and Lewis' love story. Then the story changes to depict Angela's life, Wren's mother, and at first I really didn't want it to take away from the main story but I think it really helped with the backstory of the characters' lives. It gave more background to Wren and what she has been through.
I didn't particularly feel like the ending provided closure that I personally wanted. But I think the book has the open ending as we really don't know where life is going to take us and the most unexpected realities can happen to anyone, at anytime.
I took a lot away from this book, and found I resonated a lot with Wren. I think this book may be too absurd for some people to truly understand but there is a real true story underneath the fantastical elements of the plot.
