Why Are People Into That?: A Cultural Investigation of Kink by Tina Horn

funny informative lighthearted reflective medium-paced

4.75

This was an informative, empathetic, and inclusive book with a good sense of humor. I really enjoyed it! Some of the kinks she covered are ones that gave me the ick. But by the time the chapter was complete, I felt a better understanding of those to whom that kink appeals, and found myself less icked out by the idea of it. Which I think is (one of) the author's aim(s).

My only complaint is that there isn't more of this book. It felt short, which the author fully acknowledges in the text. The world is wide and full of endless kink, and one book can only cover a tiny piece of that. I would definitely read more in a series if she chose to make it into one.

My highlights--the bits that personally resonated with, or tickled, me:

Re: high interest in sex
"Unlike him, I was 'into' sex the way that we were both 'into' pop culture. I was a fan. I didn't just want to experience sex, I wanted to analyze it, converse about it, create about it. Sex was the transistor radio I wanted to understand by taking it apart and putting it back together."

Re: wanting to be wanted
"The biggest problem was that I rarely felt that I was the object of passionate desire, and that frustrated me more than anything. I believed unwaveringly that I deserved to feel brazenly, intensely, obviously wanted."

Wanting to be wanted, re: CNC fantasies
"In my sexually formative years, I did not feel very pursued. My desire, my drive, was always greater, it seemed, than anyone I met. It is twisted, but it is what it is: a scenario of being taken against my will is for me a scenario of uncomplicated want for my body. The want is in fact so great that my very humanity becomes inconsequential. My attractiveness trumps ethics, even my humanity. Through violation, my value is at long last confirmed."

Re: Daddy kink / leather Daddies
Quoting Paiser (sp??): "The Daddy joke is that your father would take good care of you." 🤣
"By becoming a deeply personal pet name, 'Daddy' connects you to a subculture by way of a term of endearment. It invokes a hard c*ck rubbing against a bubble butt on the dance floor. Silver chains along the brim of black caps. The idea of being, and/or being under the boot of, someone enormous, who has all the knowledge, and the taste, and the unconditional love in the world. Love that is all for you, even if it's just for one brief encounter in a dark alleyway. 'Daddy' telegraphs that when you're here, you're family [💀💀💀], and no matter what happens, no matter how dangerous things get, you will be loved until the end of time."
