Do Your Worst by Rosie Danan

Did not finish book. Stopped at 57%.
DNF at 57%. Honestly this book was hyped so much and was the biggest disappointment. I have the stunning illumicrate special edition and will be getting rid of it after this.
I’m nothing if not brutally honest when a book bothers me, so let’s get into it.

Positives: the setting in the Scottish Highlands, the curse-breaker x archaeologist setup… I’m sure I’ll think of something else later, maybe.

Everything else:
- Neither of these characters are likable. Riley is annoying and aggressive. Clark is arrogant, rude, and inconsiderate. And also aggressive.
- Enemies to lovers only works for me if they aren’t actually the most toxic and hurtful people on the planet.
- I did not need a whole chapter dedicated to his very graphic masturbation to the memory of her five seconds after she leaves his room. Nope. I just didn’t need it.
- There were Criminal Mjnds references that I was STOKED about because I love that show. But the references made no sense. Like actually none. It was name-dropping a show (and one of the actors) with absolutely no relevance to the scene(s).
- There were a lot of times where backstory was filled in with absolutely no real relevance to the surrounding scene. Like the author wanted to give “context” but the context didn’t make sense.
- I simply don’t understand why this is a romance. There was no chemistry. It was all infatuation and even that seemed out of place and disconnected most of the time.
I am supposed to root for a couple in a romance and I very quickly decided that this couple should NOT be together. That’s a problem.

Spoilers ahead:
- Why tf did Clark spend all that time plotting his stupid little plan to humiliate Riley and prove that her whole life and career was a scam? Like we’re adults here, right? Why did he feel the need to act like that? And then almost be shocked that she was upset?
- And why did Riley need to break into his room and go through all his stuff? Bleed all over everything, steal his underwear, be attacked by a cat, all trying to look for a freaking hairbrush?? WHY??
- THE AGGRESSIVE HATE SEX CHAPTER? Look it’s not my preference so I won’t speak on the sex itself as it’s just not something I know or care about. But what really irked me was what happened after… WHY did Riley go for the jugular and insult him so deeply to his core? Like what was the point? It was pointless and just plain mean.
