The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not particularly familiar with Korean mythology, so it’s certainly possible that aspects of this story were lost on me. That said, I found it… fine? It’s a typical YA coming of age story where the protagonist is the fated Chosen One who will save her people through the power of her spunk and determination, who finds True Love in the end, and who ultimate gets all the rainbow-butterfly-unicorn-kittens. Yes, it’s told through the lens of a Korean myth, which is unique. I liked the worldbuilding surrounding the spirit world, which I found charming and reminiscent of Spirited Away. That said, I found the writing to be fairly juvenile – the sort of thing I’d give to a young teen as opposed to an adult. It took me about a third of the way through to figure out what was bugging me: the dialogue is all text, no subtext. Characters profess their feelings in a way that feels stilted and artificial. Also, the plot “twist” was something I saw coming from at least the midpoint, if not earlier. I’m not saying it’s a BAD book, but I’m not saying it’s a great book either. It’s… fine.
