Greek Lessons by Han Kang

3.0

Originally published in 2011, Greek Lessons by Han Kang has now been published with an English translation in 2023 and I knew I had to pick it up after reading The Vegetarian last year. Greek Lessons focuses on the importance of language and communication, whereby a Greek tutor is slowly losing his sight and his pupil who has lost her voice over time. They both suffer with difficult life circumstances which have shaped their characters over time. However I don't think that the plot was fully developed and the ending of the book is quite ambiguous and abrupt.
I think the translators Deborah Smith and Emily Yae Won did a fantastic job of translating the beautiful writing of Han Kang. There was a lot of poetry and it was an enjoyable read, even emotional at times.
In my opinion I don't think this had the same impact of The Vegetarian which was intensely raw and powerful and let's be honest, strange. I enjoy reading Kang's translated fiction and the deep and meaningful messages she pours into her books. I haven't yet read Human Acts so perhaps this is my next read of Han Kang.
