“The Unusual Suspects” is another clever, fun addition to Michael Buckley’s “The Sisters Grimm Series.”
This was one of my favourite middle grade series growing up and I’m so excited to revisit it as an adult to see how it holds up. The book is just as whimsical as I remembered, taking the classic fairytales and turning them on their heads.
Something that I loved about “The Unusual Suspects” was how well Buckley handled Sabrina’s anger and grief surrounding the disappearance of her parents and her prejudices surrounding the Everafters she finds herself surrounded by. Buckley used Sabrina’s emotions to further the book’s plot in a really resourceful way and also helped to flesh out her character even more. Twelve year olds have a lot of emotions naturally, let alone when they live in a town of fairy tales come to life. It helped to ground the book without slowing it down.
If you liked the TV show “Once Upon a Time” before it went off the rails, I highly recommend “The Sisters Grimm.”
