Just Stab Me Now by Jill Bearup
This is a book based on a series of YouTube shorts that Bearup came out with a few years ago, and which I thoroughly enjoyed. (Link is to a video compilation of the shorts – it’s well worth 45 minutes of your time.) As Bearup would say, the plot goeth thusly: a fanfic writer (Caroline) decides to write an enemies-to-loves romantic fantasy novel to prove that she can write more than just fanfic. However, her protagonists (Rosamund and Leo) continue to thwart her tropey expectations by being practical, adult, and plot-focused, as opposed to flirty and doe-eyed as Caroline would have preferred. Caroline often intrudes into the novel to have a talking-to with her characters – these almost never go the way she intends. The novel does a masterful job of taking the already-existing plot in the shorts series and adding to it: weaving in Caroline’s own storyline (involving troubles at her work and a slow burn romance with her editor Henry) and expanding out the political intrigue of the fantasy novel. It’s a fast read, hilariously metatextual, and just an all-around fun story. (And, yes, there are happy endings for both Caroline and Rosamund.) Recommended.
