What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall
dark
mysterious
tense
3.5
What Lies in the Woods is Kate Alice Marshall’s adult thriller debut and I would definitely say she pulled this story off successfully. I wouldn’t have usually picked this type of thriller up but it’s a book club read.
This story was very intriguing, straight from the first chapter. The pacing throughout the book also kept me engaged.
I did however find Naomi to be very unlikeable and her decisions left me pretty frustrated over and over again. It was an interesting small town setting, and I thought this characters overall were well-developed.
Somehow I managed to guess two of the core mysteries which I don’t usually manage, one was pretty obvious but the other was a wildcard. The way the story wrapped up was quite clever, there were twists I didn’t expect and everything was explained, leaving no open ending which was refreshing as so many thrillers I’ve read recently have left unanswered questions.
I would also read from this author in the future if she published in this genre again.
