Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection by Brandon Sanderson
In continuing my deep-dive into the Cosmere, it seemed like an appropriate time to read this collection of novellas and short stories. Some were rereads (most notably, all the Scadrian stories), some were new (everything else except Edgedancer, which I read less than a month ago). My capsule reviews for the various stories:
- The Emperor’s Soul: I really enjoyed this one and hope to read more about this fascinating magic system and the society built around it
- The Hope of Elantris: Not as good as The Emperor’s Soul, and I felt like I didn’t really understand what was going on, since I hadn’t read Elantris
- The Eleventh Metal: Not the strongest Mistborn story, but still enjoyable, and interesting to read it after having read the rest of the series so I have a better sense of what’s going on behind the cosmological scenes
- Allomancer Jak: The annotations and commentary from Jak’s Terris companion were bar none the funniest thing I have read in months – highly recommended!
- Mistborn: Secret History: A much more interesting read now that I’ve read the first three books of Stormlight Archive; very interesting how it ties in with the rest of the Cosmere
- White Sand: Felt like an excerpt – the comic section was more enjoyable than the written section, and you probably don’t need to read the written section if you’ve read the comic; I’d like to read an unabridged copy of the full story
- Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell: a little more horror than I generally like my short stories, but I admit I’m fascinated by the worldbuilding, of which we only get hints and glimpses
- Sixth of the Dark: I was fairly neutral on this one – I’d consider it one of the weaker stories in the anthology
- Edgedancer: I just reviewed this last month, so you can go back and check that longer review for my thoughts
