Midnight on Beacon Street by Emily Ruth Verona
3.0
I wanted to love this but instead I feel mehh. It’s not bad, but this just didn’t give me what i had hoped for.
- Amy was a very relatable character with relatable anxiety - about babysitting and life in general.
- The horror movie references were great, I loved how Amy constantly compared herself (realistically) to her beloved movies and characters.
- WTF was up with all the timeline jumping?? Completely unnecessary and honestly so confusing. I simply did not need to jump around fifteen times in a span of like 5 hours? I couldn’t follow the story and it really had no actual effect on anything?? Amy’s flashbacks to her and her old babysitter were great, but flashing back to three hours before midnight and then five hours and then switching POVs and then back to an hour before midnight? Too confusing and honestly made me want to stop reading a few times.
- The teenage “friends” were entirely unbelievable. Like I cannot imagine world where people would actually behave that way while someone is babysitting.
- I really thought the dad would come back into play after his threatening exit? I kind of wish he had?
- I did really like the ending and how it all wrapped up.
- I don’t know, it just felt anticlimactic. Like so much could have happened and then just didn’t.
- All this ghost talk and no real ghosts? Sad.
