A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
5.0
I ranked this as my 4th favorite read of 2022.
"You know so little of war. Battles may be fought from the outside in, but wars are won from the inside out."
Ever since a certain author showed their transphobic stripes, I've been looking for a magical world I could love again. The ADSoM trilogy did that for me. I've posted about this series several times this year. The premise involves four multiverse-like Londons, each with varying degrees of magical knowledge. I fell in love with the two main characters, Kell and Lila. Kell is from the magically powerful Red London, and just cocky enough to make you smile. And his growth throughout the series is powerful to read. Lila is from Grey London, and is scrappy and clever. Her love of weaponry is almost as strong as her inability to trust. They have a banter worthy of the best rivals-to-lovers stories. The book is adventurous, mysterious and magical, full of lots of twists and turns.
