Grimdark organized crime, The Godfather comparison on the cover is apt, just The Godfather via Joe Abercrombie. (I like to think this was the elevator pitch.) I love the group of characters assembled, especially our narrator, Tomas Piety, a crime boss in over his head when larger political and magical forces start dictating his business. I already have the next book checked out from the library waiting for me, which is a good thing, because I'm ready to go.
March 2021 reread
I often give the first book in series 4 stars instead of 5 so there's room to grow and I feel less let down if the next book isn't as good, but I absolutely had to switch this to 5 stars. Love, love, love this book and series.
