Oh wow. There's a lot going on here. The emotions were real and hitting hard at times. The conflict itself isn't exactly nuanced. It's very clear-cut and present, but also very real and relatable. I think so many people would find this meaningful for those with similar experiences. The queer rep is varied and done very well here. The emotions are intense and very fitting for a teenage age group trying to figure out their way and place in the world. I liked seeing the evolution of Gael and Declan's relationship. Gael definitely had a lot of hang-ups stemming from his parents' failed marriage, his mother's mental illness, and his own internalized transphobia. I did like seeing them actually having conversations. It may not have always happened in a timely manner, but for a couple of teenagers, I think they did really well. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I think the author did a great job in addressing a lot of heavy topics (transphobia, homophobia, racism, mental illness, etc.) in relation to the high school experience.
