Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk

A short and sweet lesbian historical fantasy. Our Heroine is a supernatural detective on the case of the perpetrator of a ritual murder. Even though she tries to get out, she’s in too deep and has no choice but to follow the grisly mystery to its conclusion. On the whole, I liked the magical worldbuilding (though I wish there were more of it), I enjoyed the character (though, again, I wish they were a bit more fleshed out), and parts of it I found quite funny. On the flip side, I thought some of the discussion of anti-gay / misogynist attitudes the protagonist faced reads as a bit on-the-nose (more like author to audience, as opposed to the narrator’s internal thoughts), and I’m ambivalent about the ending.
SpoilerIt’s not exactly a happy ending, for those who prefer their endings to be perfectly happily-ever-after.
Still, a fun period piece that overall I enjoyed.
