Enemies-to-lovers is always a trope I struggle with, and the initial enmity in this book is STRONG! Honestly, it was a little too strong and stressful for me, but since this book is the second in a series, and I had not yet read the first book, I decided to persevere. I am so glad I did!
This book is full of laugh out loud moments. There are a couple of truly hilarious scenes, and they balance well with the more introspective moments for each character. The author does a good job of showing character growth and motivation, and I think a lot of that success is owed to the dual narration (with some fourth wall breaking, as well).
Overall, this was a really fun read that I picked up on a whim from Kindle Unlimited (where I don't always have success). I plan to go back and read the first book in the series, too. I'm glad to have found a new author with what looks to be a sizable backlist, as well!
This was a fun, sports-themed romance with a strong and successful FMC and a sweet, caring MMC. The writing was a little more tell rather than show, at times, but the genuine character interactions really made up for it. Exactly what I want in entertaining reading.
I liked parts of this book, but ultimately felt underwhelmed when I finished it. The author uses a back-and-forth in time pacing to prolong the suspense of the love story, and I normally like the tension that builds. However, in this case, I think I may have responded better to a straightforward telling of the story. A dual perspective would have helped immensely, too.
The FMC, Chani, is one that I had difficulty connecting with. She is harsh to the MMC in ways that I don't understand and soft to other characters who don't deserve it. I had difficulty finding her likeable.
The MMC, Gabe, is affable and vulnerable. He was immensely more likeable to me, but I felt like there was a piece missing in showing WHY he liked Chani so well.
The ultimate reveal that the back-and-forth hints at throughout was completely a letdown for me. The resolution was too easily tied in a bow with plenty of unresolved conflicts.
As I mentioned, I wanted to like this much more than I did.
This is the stuff of fantasy, right? I've never been a big fan of Hallmark romance movies - the formula is just too much for me. But this? The believability of a screenwriter who falls in love with the leading man of her own script while he films at her house? The believability is there. I can suspend belief and revel in the quirky kids and the banter and the self-deprecation of our female main character. I can appreciate the inclusion of meatloaf Wednesdays and trying to navigate the weekend's schedule AND hoping wring just a bit of enjoyment between the constant running. Honestly, it's every single mom's dream come true!
I'm so glad I didn't give up on this series after the first book. This one was like plot catnip to me:
- the FMC is a widow ✅ - the MMC is a billionaire knight in shining armor ✅ - the banter often made me laugh out loud ✅ - plenty of spice plus tenderness ✅
Go read this one, y'all. It can stand alone, I think, but I feel like you'll appreciate the MMC more if you suffer through book #1 first.
This is sort of a textbook billionaire romance. It was not my cup of tea because the MMC is a huge asshole, and the FMC, against her better sense, returns to him over and over and over again. I can see why others would enjoy the book, but it just was not for me. I'm undecided if I'll keep up with the series.
I loved this so much. The beginning was super fun and very alluringly sexy. The characters are so detailed and well constructed. The supporting characters are perfectly poised to flesh out the world of Sewannee and Nick.
I will be recommending this one to everyone I know!
