I'm all for smut, but I like a little plot with my smut and tension building if it's going to be an enemy-to-lovers trope. Tropes are great if you make them work for you. This book was just smut with a plot to hide the fact that all there really was in the story was smutty smuttiness which would have been more enjoyable if the story helped Isolde and Adrian develop a relationship.

The world-building and story had potential, but it needed to be more inspiring, developed, and explored. The author really didn't walk the line of whether or not Isolde was just a cruel person; often, she was just nasty. Females hate females, with the MFC hostile to everyone around her. Her inner monologue wasn't quite 50 Shades bad, but it was a struggle and took me out of the moment regularly.

I'd call most of it trite, the story an afterthought, which would have been fine if there was some chemistry and intrigue between the mains, and there was none.

That being said, I was happy to turn my brain off for a few hours and embrace the soullessness of the book. I will not be continuing this series, and it hasn't inspired me to read any other books the author has written.

I'd prefer half star ratings because this would be 3.5 for me.

It's full of the tropes you see in this genre, but it was fun. It was well written, had a twist I didn't anticipate and most of the supporting characters were likable, along with the main. There was even a twist or two I didn't anticipate, which was impressive.

I liked it enough to continue with the series and will have the second book today.
