First, I need to say that I've read better writing. While there were a few spots that I thought were well done, there were too many passages that felt awkward and unwieldy. Clunky, even.

That being said, I enjoyed the book. I wanted a bit more in spots, a bit less others.

Of course, I can't review the book without touching on the main subject matter. While the story definitely made me think about my perception of God, the Trinity, and organized religion, it really didn't change my opinions on any of them. I think that might be because I believe - and always have - that God is so much more than the human mind can comprehend.

I can understand, though, why many people were bothered by the book. It definitely challenges the rules, regulations, and doctrine of most organized religions. It dares you to think outside the box, something not everyone is interested or capable of doing.

I really wanted to give this book a five star review because I usually love this author's work. Unfortunately, this was only a so-so read for me.

There were a few too many passages that I felt impatient with, enough so that I found myself wanting to skip them and, in the spirit of full disclosure, did. While the hero's back story was interesting, the passages dedicated to them were too long and too far removed from the immediate concerns of the central characters. I didn't have to read every word of the newspaper-like archeology reports in order to follow the main plot line.

That being said, I enjoyed the characters and I can see a lot of interesting possibilities for future books in this new series. The intertwining of the Darkyn and the Kyndred story lines is great and, if I know anything about this author, will only get better with each book. I think that's why the three stars isn't sitting so well. It's the potential that I see that makes me want to up the rating!
