A Midnight Clear by Sam Hooker, Dalena Storm, Cassondra Windwalker, Alcy Leyva, Seven Jane, Laura Morrison
3.0
I received a copy of this through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
2.5/3 stars.
Unfortunately, none of these stories really gripped me. They are all well written, I just didn't connect with most of them, they didn't draw me in or leave me on the edge of my seat.
I think the only one I truly enjoyed was Movin' On Up by Laura Morrison which I found to be quirky, witty and fun. I enjoyed the dynamic's between the characters and the underlying moral story.

The Afterlife Academy by Frank L. Cole

A fantastic entry book to the creepy and the paranormal for middle grade readers. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters. I wish there was a little more of Walter's history put in. But other than that it was a fantastic, witty story.

This book is a little slow to get into but I'm not sure if that's because the first half is very religion heavy, and unfortunately that always brings me into a negative head space. But that is honestly just a personal thing and doesn't detract from how well the book is written.
The story picks up in the second half, and you really start to actually see more of who Reid is as a person, as most of the chapters written from his point of view, in the beginning, are very rigid and constricted, due to his mindset and beliefs. Lou, on the other hand, is a relateable vagabond that you can instantly connect with despite her contradicting rigidity and beliefs.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the sequel.

The Toll by Neal Shusterman

4.5 stars.
It took me until well over a quarter of the way into the story before it really picked up for me. But after that it more resembled the fast paced, cat and mouse, page turner that I had loved about both Scythe and Thunderhead.
An interesting look into humanity and it's actions, the consequences of AI and it's involvement in the future of the human race.
Really enjoyed this series.

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White
4.0
3.5 out of 5 stars.
King Arthur's legend retold from the perspective of the oft forgotten Guinevere.
An interesting deception based story line concept that sadly didn't pull me in as much as I had hoped. It was an easy to read book, but I wasnt drawn in to the characters. Unfortunately they were all slightly bland and I kept clutching at the few delicious little nuggets that were thrown down, but they didn't last long enough to satisfy. The last quarter was the most interesting and gained my rating of 3.5 rather than the 3 it was sliding towards.
I had such high hopes for this due to being a fan of not only the legend of King Arthur, but also of the previous work I've read from Kiersten. It just didn't seem to have enough substance to it and the character of Guinevere had the potential to be such a complex interesting character but fell a little short.
I appreciated the concept and wish that the energy and depth to the story that came in the last 60 pages of the book had been present throughout.

A sexually charged superhero short story from start to finish. If you want something that doesn't require a lot of depth but has some really great sexual chemistry with it's characters then look no further. A very quick read, action packed from start to finish.

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
3.5/4 stars.
Almost a 'knights of the round table' vibe but with a complex female character as the lead. Espionage, deception, tested loyalties, truths uncovered. A fantastic story that centre's on gender inequality, wrapped up in a political fantasy, with just a smidge of a complicated love story thrown in.
I will be looking out for the sequel, as I am eager to see what lies in store for Reid.

I am struggling to put into articulate, intelligent words how I felt about this. So.... AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHWOBDBSOANDOWKAKABSKDKFL
Darker and grittier than Wicked Saints, with so much heartache and betrayal interwoven with grief and suffering. I loved it so very very much.
If you crave sadness, here it is.
