Dubliners by James Joyce

This is one of short story novel(la)s that I've added to my favourite! It may be boring if you read it in a quick way, but each of the short story actually offers something more and I like listening to a discussion about each of them. While I love all the stories, if I have to pick a fav, it would be:
Araby
A young boy had a crush of his friend's sister. He'd promised to get her something from Araby. But he ended up going back home empty handed because he realised something...
It's the journey of him going there at night that left me pondering.
A Little Cloud
Two old friends meeting again after eight years. Little Chandler always thought he could do better than his friend Gallaher, as he did at school. The only thing that kept him was his shyness, or so he thought. Chandler is described as that good guy and Gallaher a wild and a traveler. During the meeting, Chandler realised that now Gallaher became famous; and Chandler began to wonder how he could change his current life so he could be free to realise his dream.
The Boarding House
a butcher's daughter, Mrs. Mooney married her father's foreman. But after her father died, her husband began to drink and ran into debt. She decided to separate from him, sell her butcher shop and opened a boarding house. Her daughter was a wild, flirtatious girl. She was meant to entertain the young men, but she began to give a special attention to one particular young man named Mr. Doran. She got pregnant. Now Mr. Doran had to face her mother. The end of the story made me think,"oh! It's a twist! I knew it!!" ~~~~ I'm not gonna tell the entire story or what the twist is! You haven't read? Please do! ~~~~

The Weaverbirds by Thomas M. Hunter, Y.B. Mangunwijaya
4.0
The Weaverbirds. It’s not a general, typical love story. And no, it’s not only about love but characters. Said to be an Indonesian classic.
What would you do if you were to live during the war and proclamation?
Teto and Atik were very closed friends. Although both loved each other very much they maintained a platonic relationship. Teto aka Sutadewa, a mixed blood Dutch-Indonesian, stood up for the KNIL while Atik aka Larasati belonged to Javanese aristocrat family and obviously viewed Soekarno as hero. Teto’s arrogance and hypocritical character led him to regret the steps he had made. this novel brings you into both his life and that of Atik, but he’s the main character. Did Teto and Atik finally get married? How did their journey end? That’s what You need to read to find out.

Jaren geleden de film adaptatie gekeken. Eergisteren dacht te lezen want misschien is het boekversie veel beter. Al is het heel mooi geschreven vind ik het hele verhaal nog zo zo…
The Wretched by Victor Hugo

This novel is not for hasty readers. You might want to bail it only because the story is very long! But stick with it. It’s worth it!
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

This novel is readable in the means that it is able to "summon" you into the 19th century of France, Italy, and Mediterranean. There's never a dull moment where I got bored during reading. If you get overwhelmed by the thickness of the book, don't let it intimidate you because it reads like a train and before you know it you're already far from the first few chapters. "Oh..but why should I read the novel, that has more than 1000 pages if I've watched the movie?" -- Well, it's far from what you've watched! Of course, the movie version is also amazing and I call it as a motivation to read the novel.
What I've learned from it:
- That no matter how good you think your friends are, but if they're not healthy emotionally, they can hurt you
- That revenge doesn't solve your inner pain
- That karma does come around and go around
- That lack of knowledge doesn't shield you from cruelties
Nevertheless, this novel has successfully made me scream for joy, but also cry and feel emotional :3

Middlemarch by George Eliot
5.0
It took me a month of reading it but it’s worth it! This novel is indeed, as Woolf said, a victorian novel for adults. It fascinates me how Eliot described every character in detail. This novel doesn’t only tell that a couple finally got married but it goes farther than that: what happens next. Middlemarch, a town where everyone knows and is connected with each other, what one does will have impact to others.
My favourite couple is Fred and Mary! They’re so sweet together!
But i dislike Rosamond Vincy/Lydgate. She’s so narcissistic. Dorothea is brave: giving it all up for love. If I were her I’d travel the world instead.
Middlemarch has simple become one of my favourites! If you struggle in book 1 already, I’d say: don’t give up! But don’t force read it. Take it slow. I find that this novel requires full attention and you can’t simply speed read it.
IF I may wish that George Eliot had done: I wish that she had written this novel a bit longer about Dorothea's life after she married her second husband. I find it to be too short

The World According to Anna by Jostein Gaarder
