Eli is a personal trainer who is trying to make ends meet for him and his father, who has spent his life in and out of prison. Charlotte is very family oriented and her family is struggling to pay off her grandmother’s medical debt. In high school, the both of them dated but ended up breaking up on bad terms. Now, in order for both of them to support their families, they end up on a game show as partners. However, this game show has some behind the scene issues with its legitimacy, due to a sleazy host that will stop at nothing to get the views.
This was a quick, cute read! I enjoyed the characters and how they interacted together. I felt like they had great character development.
The plot of this one was what sold me. I love game shows and reality tv, so the atmosphere was perfect for me. Lots of fun trivia facts, banter, and high stakes.

- I had such high hopes for this one. Mainly because of the plot, which was set in Martha’s Vineyard. I have always wanted to visit that island! However, the location was where my love for this book started and stopped.
- I liked that the FMC (Sam) was neurodivergent (dyslexic). However, Sam constantly talked about being dyslexic. It was her entire personality. She dragged herself down daily because of it. It made it to where she literally couldn’t function in day-to-day activities. Her disability was used as a crutch. By the end, she was no better, she never overcame her adversities or stopped labeling herself as “broken”. We never saw any healing or growth from her.
- It’s perfect fate that she meets Ben, an avid reader. Opposite’s definitely attracted in this situation. However, I felt like we never got to know Ben. We just knew about him in relation to Sam. This book could have benefitted with a dual POV.
- I didn’t like how (before she told him her disability), she kept making comments about how an avid reader could never fall in love with a non-reader. This was repeated several times. It got annoying, honestly, because that honestly how it is in most relationships— one is a book lover and the other isn’t. At least it’s like that with my husband and I. And he admits that he never once thought I wouldn’t like him because he didn’t like books😂
- For the first 50% of the book, the story was more about her adapting to her temporary home, finding a job, reconnecting with her bff, and building a better relationship with her half brother. Romance felt like a subplot.
- The plot felt slicey and dicey. It didn’t flow as nice as I would have liked.
- The narrators voice sounded very formal, given the subject of the plot. Her voice didn’t fit the story or the main character.

This book was just kind of bizarre to me.
The relationship between Teague and Callie was sweet. Usually I love this, but this book was a Mafia romance. There isn’t much sweetness in the beginning of a mafia arranged marriage. They instantly fell in love. This also doesn’t work well for mafia.
Teague was a bland, weak man. He didn’t have much to him. He didn’t unalive people on the side. He didn’t get into constant fights. Most of his pov’s centered around him feeling sorry for himself because he hated being apart of his family.
Callie was the star of this book. She shot people who needed to be shot. Unalived people who needed to be unalived. She stood her ground when people tried to undermine her. She was a true boss lady. I loved her character.
The multiple, constantly switching povs were distracting and often not needed. There were so many side characters that were given povs like they were main characters. It was too much to keep track of and follow, especially since they happened sporadically in the middle of chapters and didn’t have sections explicitly displaying the character switch.
The plot was weak. We were constantly told that a war was coming from the start of the book. When the “war” came it was very underwhelming.
