The insight into the mlm is really interesting. What it looked like and how she felt about it. She prefaces her story by saying she recognizes she has privelege but I don't think I was readdy for this amount of privilege. I think I appreciate this book mostly for showing me the life of someone so different from myself. The research though is really surface level. She quotes sources but they are often not academic ones (Cultish is quoted for example). She mentions multiple times that she is a privileged white woman but she seems a bit disconnected about how that plays into her mlm story. She was a very bored house wife kinda regretting mom life with her five kids. She was also able to afford five kids on a single income, that is some serious money. She seems a bit in denial about how much of a leg up she had when she started. It's not just her whiteness, it's how rich she is, how rich the people she knows are and the way she carries herself, which is part whiteness and part more than that. She also seems to see underprivileged in extremes such as people in food desserts. But her life was (and is) unattainable for the vast majority of people. I also dislike her husband and her lack of critical thinking about gender roles before she is forced to reflect on it in the book. She mentions it but does not talk about the conversations she had about it with her husband and their solutions (at least I very much hope they solved these issues).
This is a great scifi anthology and to me it proofs that diverse authors lead to diverse and interestin stories. My favorites were Nameless by Nazbah Tom and History of the New World by Adam Garbet Jones.
Really felt like the start of a series so not a lot is going on yet. But the premise is really good so far. A demon hunting demons whilst sharing their mind with a mortal? Really curious where it's going to go.
I had this on my tbr as a Queer mystery but it’s more a horror/mystery crossover. I’m not easily creeped out by things I read, but this one was truly spooky. Might have waited to finish this in the morning rather than at night. I liked the characters but maybe the romance was a little rushed. Really looking forward to reading the next book.
I agree with all of the other reviews, this book is adorable! The characters felt so real as did their lives and struggles. A woman who knows how to sew her own clothes and the importance of feeling good in your clothes, was really nice.
I've been looking for a good Queer mystery for a while and I've definitely found it with this book! Love the premise of four aunties taking justice into their own hands. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but that’s fair as you really get to know the characters. The mystery was well done and not too predictable. I liked that it was not a murder they’re trying to solve but something else. As well as the discussion of why justice is hard to find in legal ways for some people. Plus the Queer, Trans and disabled representation in the book was great.
I do have to give a warning (which the author also does in the beginning of the book), the sexual assaults might not be on page, but some of the aftermath is, so be sure you’re able to handle that when you start the book.
This very much felt like the beginning of a series, just an introduction of the characters but not yet in depth. Expect two stand off ish gay detectives and Criminal Minds levels of gore.
I loved this book. I'm really into paranormal mysteries and this is one of the better ones I've read. One of the things I'm always looking for in fantasy books is characters who have knowledge about the magical world they live in. To me that makes the story more interesting. This book had that, two professionals who have worked for the organisation for over a decade. The Autistic representation was done well, the tiredness, the limit to the amount of background noice/people and the guilty internal voice. I thought the romance was also believable and cute.
